Croatian Travel: Eufrasian Basilica

The Eufrasian Basilica of Porec

Porec, a coastal town located on the western part of Istrian peninsula, is home to a tourist’s paradise of beach resorts that stretch along the picturesque Adriatic Sea. While it is a very industrialized, international, and multilingual city that is often packed with Italian vacationers, it is also the home to an important UNESCO World Heritage site, The Basilica of Porec.

The beautiful Eufrasian Basilica is one of the greatest examples of Byzantine art and architecture still intact today. Built by Bishop Euphrasius during the 6th century, it is considered one of the most perfectly preserved Christian churches in all of Europe and is Istria’s most popular attraction. On the grounds there is also a 5th century church, atrium, octagonal baptistery, bell tower, and the bishop’s residence.

Inside you’ll find the a stunning array of 6th century biblical mosaics depicting images of the Virgin Mary, Istrian martyrs, and various angels along the walls, ceilings, and floors of the main domed apse. One of the mosaics portrays Bishop Euphrasius himself holding a model of the church in his hand. Next to the basilica is the Bishop’s Palace where you can also see a nice collection of 4th century mosaics and many ancient stone monuments. You might also want to climb the up into the belfry of the central chapel to take in a bird’s eye view of the surrounding region.

Admission into the Eufrasian Basilica is free, but there is a slight charge to climb into the belfry. Visiting hours are year-round from 7:30am to 7pm.
