The New Tuscany: Istria

The Istrian peninsula is the area of Croatia that is located in the upper northwest corner of the country, bordering the country of Slovenia. Here you will find a heavy Italian population and influence which has affected the area’s architecture, language, and food to the point that the region is commonly referred to as the new Tuscany.

The main city of the region is Pula, on the southern tip of the peninsula, which is home to a 1st century Roman amphitheater, Roman walls, and other well-preserved Roman ruins. On a tiny nearby island you’ll find the Brijuni National Park where you will see nearly 700 species of plants. There is also a safari park that is home to a large community of exotic animals that were brought there by the former Yugoslav leader, Josip Tito.

Traveling along the western coast of Istria you’ll be impressed by the strong Venetian feel and flavor due to the areas Venetian occupation for more than 500 years. There you will find the towns of Rovinj and Porec, two of the most popular seaside resort and beach vacation areas in all of Croatia. This area is also quite well known as a popular vacation spot for those who enjoy nude bathing and skinny-dipping. There are several naturist camps and resorts here that are nudist friendly.

In the northern central part of the Istrian peninsula you will find the hilltop towns of Groznjan and Motovun. These areas are most notably known for their truffle and mushroom trade. This is an ideal area to visit during the autumn months as there are a variety of food festivals held that celebrate the region’s delectable delights.
