Croatian Travel: Moreska Sword Dances
Who will win the battle of the Moreska Sword Dances?
If you get the chance to visit the Croatian island of Korcula, you will not want to miss viewing an exhibition of their famous Moreska sword dance. This traditional sword dance has been performed on Korcula since the 16th century, but it was a common dance performed throughout the Mediterranean as far back as the 12th century. Today, however, Korcula is the only place left where you will find this dramatic and beautiful sword dance being performed.
The Moreska sword dance tells the story of a battle between the White King and the Black King over the love of a young princess. The story begins as the Black King kidnaps the fiance of the White King. As the kidnapped princess continues to declare her love for the White King, the Black King refuses to let her go and a sword battle ensues.
The battle is fought by both of the kings and their soldiers as they break up into seven different circles, displaying seven different intricate sword dances. Of course, the battle ends with the White King winning back his beloved princess and all is well again.
This fascinating and entertaining sword battle has traditionally been performed on July 29 during the Sveti Todor Days in Korcula, however it is now performed regularly during the summer months. Performances are usually conducted at the southern gate on Monday and Thursday evenings between June and September, but check with the local tourist board or your hotel for Moreska sword dancing schedules. Exhibitions are also performed throughout the island of Korcula, so keep an eye out because you will not want to miss this romantic and exciting dance.
