Croatian Travel: Split

The City of Split

The city of Split, which is located in the southern coastal region of Croatia commonly known as Dalmatia, is considered the jumping off point to the numerous islands and summer resorts that are located in the area. However, the city itself is a wonderful first stop for any tourist who wants to enjoy the archaeology, history, and culture of the region.

In order to fully understand Split’s historical significance, a visit to the city’s many museums is a must. This should include the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, Archaeological Museum, Treasury of the Split Cathedral, Ethnographic Museum, Art Gallery, and Mestrovic Gallery.

While enjoying a little of the Croatian fresh air, you might want to take a stroll through Marjan Forest Park, a short fifteen minute walk from the city’s center through the beautiful old quarter of Varos. The park offers nature paths, playgrounds, promenades, solariums, and even a zoo. At the top of Marjan Hill you will find Telegrin, a vista point that will allow you a breathtaking view of Split and its surrounding islands.

For fun and entertainment, Split offers a wide range of events throughout the year, especially during the summer months. The Split Summer Festival in July and August features open-air concerts featuring traditional music, opera, and ballet performances. You can also enjoy the Festival of Popular Music in June which attracts both local and international stars. On a smaller scale, the Split Saturday Nights provide classical music venues throughout the city every weekend during the summer.

Also, if you're a Game of Thrones fan, you'll be able to stroll the same streets that Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons do, as Split is one of the shooting location for the fictional city of Meereen.
