Visiting Israel: Holy Sites

Most people interested in visiting Israel are usually drawn to Jerusalem in order to visit some of the most sacred and spiritual historical spots in the world. Whether religiously inclined or not, there are several can’t miss holy sites that every visitor to Israel should include on their trip.

The Western Wall is considered the holiest Jewish site where Orthodox Jews have been visiting for centuries. This huge structure is a retaining wall that is surrounding and supporting the Temple Mount. It was nicknamed the Wailing Wall due to the practice of Orthodox Jews wailing and swaying in prayer as they mourn the loss of their beloved temple. People of all religions are permitted to approach the wall, however, portions of the wall are divided separating the men from the women, keeping with Orthodox traditions.

The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine built in the 7th century which covers the rock where the Jewish people believe Abraham prepared the sacrifice of Isaac, but Arabs believe it was to be Ishmael who was sacrificed. Due to the ever changing contentions between the peoples of the region, you may or may not be able to enter the site, but if you are allowed to it is a can’t-miss stop.

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is Christianity’s holiest site where you can visit the locations of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial preparation, entombment, and resurrection. This fascinating church is divided into six different Christian sects: Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Egyptian Coptic, Syrian Orthodox, and Ethiopian. Actual lines are even painted on the floors and pillars dividing the church into its specific areas.
