Visiting Israel: Wineries

Drinking in Jerusalem is not something that many Israelis indulge in on a regular basis; however, enjoying a good bottle of wine with dinner is fairly commonplace. There are a number of nice wineries located in the hilly areas of the country where tourists can visit, sample some of the local wines, and buy a few bottles to take home.

Approximately 12 miles west of Jerusalem you will find the Latrum Monastery, a beautiful winery surrounded by lush gardens and olive orchards. Founded by Trappist monks in 1890, wine liqueur, honey, and olive oil are all still produced and sold here by the monks. Aside from tasting good wines, you will also enjoy exploring the grounds.

The Tzora Winery, known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc wines, is located in the mountainous region between Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh. You can purchase wines and cheeses at the winery store and then enjoy your finds in a lovely picnic area on the grounds. Private tours can be arranged at the winery, but you must call ahead.

The Soreq Winery is another boutique winery that has been producing wine for only the last fifteen years, however, they have established themselves as the producers of highly rated Merlots, Chardonnays, and Cabernet Sauvignons. Located a short drive south of Tel Aviv, private tours can also be arranged here if you call ahead.

There is another nice winery, the Cremesan Winery, located near Bethlehem on the West Bank, but due to the ever-changing political situation in the area, it is not generally safe for tourists to visit. However, when security issues clear up you will want to visit this winery to enjoy some Italian-style wines that are made by Italian monks there.
