How to Scuba Dive in Croatia

Scuba diving in the Adriatic Sea along the coastal regions of the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia is a popular and attractive activity for both Croatian locals and tourists alike. There are many wonderful scuba diving activities and attractions throughout the Croatian coastline, including underwater Greek and Roman ruins, as well as sunken ships from the various battles that have taken place between warring empires throughout the long history of the region. This is a wonderful place for scuba diving through the crystal clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, but if you are planning a diving trip to Croatia you do need to be aware of the rules and regulations governing diving in the country.

Recreational diving is regulated by the Ministry of the Sea, Transport, Tourism, and Development and every diver must obtain a diving card prior to making any dives. This can be easily purchased through the many diving clubs and centers located throughout the tourist areas along the entire coast of Croatia. The diving card costs about twenty dollars and is good for an entire year. Diving cards are only issued to those who can prove their diving qualifications from a recreational diving school or association. If you want or need to take diving lessons, there are plenty of diving clubs along the coast that will provide these services.

Diving in Croatia is only allowed in controlled diving zones determined by the Ministry of Culture. No diving zones include National Parks, internal waterways near ports, areas of dense traffic, special reserves, and guarded military facilities. However, special permission has been granted to specific diving organizations in these areas, so contact your local diving center in order to arrange diving trips to these areas.
