Croatian Travel: Transportation
How to Travel Inside Croatia
Once you arrive in Croatia, either by plane, train, or automobile, you might want to venture out into the various parts of the country. From the mountain regions of the north to the coastal regions of the south, Croatia has a rich and diverse landscape to explore.
You can travel within Croatia on state-owned Croatia Airlines, which can fly you to and from most of the major and minor cities within the country. Flights can be booked once you have arrived in Croatia, but you will find cheaper fares if you book them in advance.
Taking a bus from town-to-town is a good and less expensive option, as well. Most bus services between the most popular tourist destinations offer daily schedules throughout the year. It’s not a very glamorous way to travel, but you will get to enjoy the passing landscapes and perhaps meet some local Croatians along the way.
While Croatia does have a national rail line, Croatian Railways, it is not as extensive as might be found in other European countries. However, rail service between the largest cities is available and the country is improving the network by adding new routes and modernized cars to the existing rail system. Though the train system offers less frequent schedules than the bus, it is a much more comfortable and enjoyable way to travel between stops. When traveling long distances, you will want to book a seat on the express train and reservations are recommended, especially during the heaviest tourist months of July and August.
