Croatian Travel: What to Eat

What kinds of food will you find in Croatia?

Croatian food is a wonderful and rich combination of the many cultures that have influenced its development over the years. Depending on what part of the country you are visiting you might find foods that are reminiscent of Italian, Hungarian, or even Turkish cooking styles. However, just about anywhere you travel in Croatia you will find that the food is generally good tasting, hearty, fresh, and affordable.

The average Croatian has little money to spend on eating out, but they do have high expectations for the food they dine on when they do venture out. This is great for the tourist because you will generally find food that is reasonably priced, of high quality, and tastes good no matter where you choose to dine.

Meals in the northeastern and northwestern areas of Croatia are usually heavy in meats, such as lamb, pork, veal, duck, and turkey. This area has mostly been influence by Hungarian cuisine and you will generally find heartier meals, such as goulash or heavy cakes. The food is generally spicier in the northern regions and you will find a lot of garlic and local spices being used.

Along the western coastal regions you will find more of a Mediterranean style of cuisine with lots of fresh fish, pasta, and bread being served with locally made olive oil and garlic. Another local treat is wild truffles, or tartufe, which is a real delicacy, especially in the Istria peninsula. You can also find pizza that is amazingly good made with thick crust and topped with fresh olives, cheeses, sausages, and hams.
