Croatian Travel: When to Visit

When is the Best Time to Visit Croatia?

Croatia is a tourist friendly country and is well suited to accommodate most of your travel needs throughout the year. Whether you choose to stay in one of the big and expensive hotels that dot the Dalmatian coast, a small family-owned guesthouse, in a quaint fishing village, or just want to camp out on one of the many beachfront campgrounds, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from.

Visiting Croatia anytime between April and September is a good time to go. While the Adriatic Sea might be a bit too cold to swim in at the beginning of the season, the temperatures will be warm, the skies clear, and prices reduced throughout the country.

If you are going to Croatia in search of the many outdoor activities the country has to offer, such as swimming, diving, boating, or bike riding, then you’ll want to go between May and June. The temperatures are still enjoyable, the waters are warmer, and the Italian and German tourists have yet to arrive. The only thing you should keep in mind is that this is the time of year when most Croatian school children are spending their end of year holidays.

The peak of tourist season in Croatia is July and August, so if you’re planning on traveling there during those months then it would be a good idea to make reservations well in advance because it can get quite crowded with European vacationers. Expect higher prices and lots of crowds. The only advantage of visiting Croatia during this time of year is that there are more island hopping ferries to choose from.

September is the best time of year to visit Croatia because it is not as sweltering hot as it is in August, the waters are still warm, the crowds have dissipated, and the prices have gone down. If you’re interested in skiing in Croatia, then anytime after October is ideal.
